So far in the month of August, Chickie and I have shot three matches.  Each one had the same overall lesson. "Shoot the stage in front of me."  Bucky Buckskin, Arcadia Outlaw, Christian Mortician, Shelleen, Cypress Sam, Fireball, Delta Glen, and Santa Fe River Stan have all said something similar to me at least once this month.  You’d think I would have learned my lesson in less than 16 stages, but I did not.     ...

Here is a new shooters packet we created to make it a little easier to digest when first starting out.  We have gathered the most important sections of the handbook and the rules as well as some other helpful info.  If you are going to print this out, print on both sides of the paper so it isn't so big. As you become more experienced in CAS you should read through the entire Shooters Handbook. Better yet, take the SASS ROI course and get taught about the rules and operations of our game by an ...

I want to start by saying thank you to Copperhead Joe, Iron Madden Whiskey Creek Johnson, Ringer, Catatonic, Noah Fitz, Sandy and the rest of the small army of people that worked their butts off to make Black Gold 2020 GREAT! It was hot and I know I did not see them guys stop once. They really know how to put on a shindig up there. Hats off guys what an excellent job. This match had been on our list since we heard about it when we got into this game and it did not disappoint. We felt welcomed an...

I shoot with CAS Clubs all over the Sunshine State.  I am from Southeast Florida where our mean winter low is 41° and, hence, why so many people retire to this area.  Summer dress code is always a hot topic down here which is debated in person, on social media, and the wire ad infinitum.  Let’s face it, Florida has an extreme blend of heat, humidity, and unrelenting sun not found in many other places.  Are there locales that are hotter temperature wise?  Of course.  Are their regions that posses...

This spotlight and the next are going to focus on fairly new shooters. Midwest Hale has been at it for about 3 years now and has come a long way rather quickly. Go to We The People Munnitions and use the code Hale5 for 5% off your order. I'm sure her sponsors would appreciate that. Lets dive in and see what she had to say. Where do you live? As we peruse the other SASS Facebook Groups we are very glad to see many new people interested in joining SASS. But we see a similar theme time and again from these potential shooters. They want to wait to attend a match until they are fully geared up and outfitted. This is the first mistake too many new shooters make when joining our great sport. We will address a few of these reasons in this article. Feel free to comment on anything we may have missed or from a different perspective. I hope we...

It's that time again. Cassalong Hopidy from the Red Hill Rangers in north Florida took the time to answer the questions in the spotlight this week. Traditional is fast Deilest is coolest but gunfighters make it look cool! here is what he had to say.  Where do you live? (what state or country) I live in Tallahassee, Florida,  a beautiful little town that was even prettier when I moved here in 1969, probably because there were only about 35,000 souls here then and it’s now nearly 10 times mo...

With the world in a mess right now and everyone “Social Distanced” I thought why not talk about how A dark Day on the Santa Fe was a great match. Confederate Colt, Jane Deere, Yadkin, Rocky Creek and the rest of the team up there did an outstanding job. The stages were clean and fast and had challenges for everyone. Hats off y’all, keep up the excellent work. This year I decided to shoot Dark Day and seeing Madame Moog won cap and ball pistols at EoT last year. I though why not. Let me tell y...

We have reached out to as many Match Directors as we can and will be in constant contact with them about the status of their matches. If you are an MD, TG, etc. and would like to keep us updated we will maintain this schedule for anyone interested in attending. Any help is appreciated. This week we are back in Florida, with the Ides Of March approaching I thought, why not find out what a hard working lady that's keeps the cowboy on point at The Ides has to say. Hey Y’All, it’s been a while since I have blogged about shooting or Shelleen and I’s adventures. To be honest you haven’t missed much. Shelleen retired from working and is now a professional cowboy action shooter practicing 3 or 4 times a week with a couple matches thrown in there on the weekends. He is (was) steady whoopin me and he is such a modest winner. That is until first Sunday in February. I beat him at the Hernando County Regulators monthly match and finished 2nd overall. Bogus (bogug) ...

For this week’s Shooter Spotlight, we’re back down south to Florida. I am lucky to get to shoot with this young lady even though watching her run her shotgun makes me feel like less of a man. This weeks spotlight is a nice polite young man from the frozen tundra or what everyone else call Canada. He's a fast shooter but he couldn't escape the ASN Bounty Hunt at EOT 2019. I personally, took him off the streets of Founders Ranch for a couple minutes before he made a break for it and shot a very fine match. Let's get to know Whistling Will.     ...

2019 was my first full calendar year in Cowboy Action Shooting.  It was a year full of new beginnings both for Chickie and myself.  When 2019 started, I was only 4 months into my CAS career and had a mere 13 matches under my gunbelt.  By the end, I've shot over 90 matches including 6 annuals.  Chickie was still months away from her first match at the dawn of the year.  I'd not even gotten all of my guns or gear and Chickie hadn't even started (besides her costumes) to get outfitted.  It seems li...

What can I say about 2019? I “shot” more than a few matches. Ides of March, Fl state, GA state, EOT, SC State and S.E regional, as well as too many monthlies to name. I met new people, made new friends and strengthened bonds with old friends. I look forward to the time we will spend together in 2020.   My shooting wasn’t very competitive this year. I was not able to close the deal at any state match. I place 2-5 in my category a couple times, but no 1st. I did win a couple over all monthli...

I thought I would try something different this month with the blog and do a shooter spotlight. I figured we could pick a member and ask a few questions to get to know them better. If Y'All like it, we can do it once or twice a month. Let me know in the comments if you think this is fun and who you would want to see in the spotlight. This month is Santa Fe River Stan, a Florida cowboy and member of The Cracker Crew. A crack pot and a crack shot. Here is what he had to say.   When did you st...

Let me start by thanking Branchwater Jack, Marshall TKD, Buck D Law, Barkeep Casey and anyone else that volunteered their time and hard work on Ambush at Cavern Cove. The weather made it extra challenging and you guys pulled it off. My first time to your range, hats off.  The festivities at the range on Friday night were fun and the food was good. The awards and dinner were in a very nice facility with a spectacular view off the very large patio. Madame Moog and I had a great time and will be re...

Madame and I drove to South Carolina to (lol) compete in the state match. We drove mostly north for 7 hours to have the temperature get hotter. I think the theme of the match must have been hell fire because it was probably the hottest match I shot all summer and I shoot in sticky humid Florida. Doc Kemm, Sue Render, Whiskey Mac, The Cottons, grey dog and everyone else that worked their butts off putting that shindig together, Madame and I thank you. I know Y’All didn’t stop running until this m...
