I shoot with CAS Clubs all over the Sunshine State.  I am from Southeast Florida where our mean winter low is 41° and, hence, why so many people retire to this area.  Summer dress code is always a hot topic down here which is debated in person, on social media, and the wire ad infinitum.  Let’s face it, Florida has an extreme blend of heat, humidity, and unrelenting sun not found in many other places.  Are there locales that are hotter temperature wise?  Of course.  Are their regions that posses...

With the world in a mess right now and everyone “Social Distanced” I thought why not talk about how A dark Day on the Santa Fe was a great match. Confederate Colt, Jane Deere, Yadkin, Rocky Creek and the rest of the team up there did an outstanding job. The stages were clean and fast and had challenges for everyone. Hats off y’all, keep up the excellent work. This year I decided to shoot Dark Day and seeing Madame Moog won cap and ball pistols at EoT last year. I though why not. Let me tell y...

I want to start by saying thank you to Copperhead Joe, Iron Madden Whiskey Creek Johnson, Ringer, Catatonic, Noah Fitz, Sandy and the rest of the small army of people that worked their butts off to make Black Gold 2020 GREAT! It was hot and I know I did not see them guys stop once. They really know how to put on a shindig up there. Hats off guys what an excellent job. This match had been on our list since we heard about it when we got into this game and it did not disappoint. We felt welcomed an...

What can I say about the crew that came together to pull of one of the most fun matches that I have attended, that has not been said before? Let me try. Thank you, Arcadia Outlaw and Greta D, for keeping the fire burning for the 2020 Ides. Arcadia Outlaw wrote excellent stages and Greta D kept the ship pointed in the right direction. With all the crazy stuff going on in the world these days I know it was stressful to even think about and try to plan for. You guys pulled it off, well done. De...

2019 was my first full calendar year in Cowboy Action Shooting.  It was a year full of new beginnings both for Chickie and myself.  When 2019 started, I was only 4 months into my CAS career and had a mere 13 matches under my gunbelt.  By the end, I've shot over 90 matches including 6 annuals.  Chickie was still months away from her first match at the dawn of the year.  I'd not even gotten all of my guns or gear and Chickie hadn't even started (besides her costumes) to get outfitted.  It seems li...

March seems so long ago. Madame Moog and I started making the posse pins for the ASN EOT Bounty Hunt. We created the image, engraved the pin and touched them up. Glued the pin to the back then stuck them to the cards. Then made pins for Waddies and Staff. Made the sign and the boxes for the entry forms and shipped it all to SASS.                                                 ...

Let me start by thanking Branchwater Jack, Marshall TKD, Buck D Law, Barkeep Casey and anyone else that volunteered their time and hard work on Ambush at Cavern Cove. The weather made it extra challenging and you guys pulled it off. My first time to your range, hats off.  The festivities at the range on Friday night were fun and the food was good. The awards and dinner were in a very nice facility with a spectacular view off the very large patio. Madame Moog and I had a great time and will be re...

What a weekend, this past weekend was the Lake County Pistoleros monthly match. I stopped to pick up my shooting buddy Shelleen and the guard at the gate didn’t even ask me any questions. He just opened the gate. After 3 years it’s about time they know me. 6:30 am we’re rolling for Eustis fl. It was hot already and super steamy, that didn’t stop us. The drive went by pretty quick and before we knew it we were on the range and signed in. We said the pledge and made the announcements and we were o...

Madame and I drove to South Carolina to (lol) compete in the state match. We drove mostly north for 7 hours to have the temperature get hotter. I think the theme of the match must have been hell fire because it was probably the hottest match I shot all summer and I shoot in sticky humid Florida. Doc Kemm, Sue Render, Whiskey Mac, The Cottons, grey dog and everyone else that worked their butts off putting that shindig together, Madame and I thank you. I know Y’All didn’t stop running until this m...

As we peruse the other SASS Facebook Groups we are very glad to see many new people interested in joining SASS. But we see a similar theme time and again from these potential shooters. They want to wait to attend a match until they are fully geared up and outfitted. This is the first mistake too many new shooters make when joining our great sport. We will address a few of these reasons in this article. Feel free to comment on anything we may have missed or from a different perspective. I hope we...

What can I say about 2019? I “shot” more than a few matches. Ides of March, Fl state, GA state, EOT, SC State and S.E regional, as well as too many monthlies to name. I met new people, made new friends and strengthened bonds with old friends. I look forward to the time we will spend together in 2020.   My shooting wasn’t very competitive this year. I was not able to close the deal at any state match. I place 2-5 in my category a couple times, but no 1st. I did win a couple over all monthli...

It's that time again. Cassalong Hopidy from the Red Hill Rangers in north Florida took the time to answer the questions in the spotlight this week. Traditional is fast Deilest is coolest but gunfighters make it look cool! here is what he had to say.  Where do you live? (what state or country) I live in Tallahassee, Florida,  a beautiful little town that was even prettier when I moved here in 1969, probably because there were only about 35,000 souls here then and it’s now nearly 10 times mo...

I didn’t make a blog in February, some of the reason is I was sick and the other was I didn’t shoot well enough to comment. This month however was different. Madame Moog and I drove out to The Ides Of March on Friday the 15th to help with anything that we were needed for. I ran some side matches Madame shopped. Dinner that night with cowboy friends was nice as usual.   Saturday morning and it was time to get it done. We loaded up headed out to the range; Shelleen was our posse marshal and ...

I want to start by saying thank you. Thank you to everyone that worked so hard to make EOT 2019 a great match and a better time. Deuce Stevens and Lassiter made some challenging stages worthy of a world championship. If you ask Deuce he’ll tell you that he couldn’t have done it with  out Cowboy Carty and the army of others that came together to make it happen. Misty Moonshine and the SASS Staff ran a well oiled machine with all the fixins, opening ceremony, dinner and shootout announce...

It’s been a month already! Here we go. First weekend was Hernando County Regulators https://actionshootingnetwork.com/hcr Shoulda Dun Gun keeps you on your toes with some creative stage writing. I had a decent match for me, Shelleen’s shotgun worked for him on most of the stages. Madame Moog however had a great match with a sad ending. Madame has been chasing that clean match since she started playing this game. She was clean up to the last rifle shot where she had to hit a plate and make i...

This month was less than stellar for the Moog. Madame Moog on the other hand had a great month. Scoring her very first clean match at The Hernando County Regulators monthly and making some of the best runs on stages since she started shooting. Not that Shoulda Dun Gun took it easy on her either, using her little red plate nemisis. Keep it up Madame Moog, I know your fan club will be cheering for ya. There is something going on with my rifle, I cant seem to get 10 rounds out smoothly. At the ...

Thursday afternoon Madame Moog and I set out to meet up with the cracker crew and shoot the Georgia State Match. I tell Y’All Eddie and the boys up there sure do put on a great match. If you haven’t been you should put it on your list. Thank you Fast Eddie, Krazy Kajun, Blackhawk Henry and the set up crew for all of your hard work to make this match a success. Also, thank you to all the workin cowboys that picked brass, ran the timer, spotted, set steel or any of the other posse jobs. It really ...

What are they? Which one should I shoot? Why are there so many? These are all questions I get asked often from new and prospective shooters. Let me start by saying that categories are confusing. And there are a lot of them, like, A LOT! So many that it confuses even seasoned Match Directors when figuring out awards for their matches. So, with this mind, I offer this advice to new shooters. Keep it simple when you first start. Basic gun safety, safely completing a CAS stage, basic SASS safe...
